Tiffany Miller

I began my career as an artist by accident
while studying business in college. Having to fulfill an elective requirement, I
reluctantly chose an art class… and as they say, the rest is history. I later
apprenticed with renowned artist, Lois Stout, in Sedona, Arizona. Under her
guidance I learned painting, framing, jewelry, ceramics, and candle-making. Soon
after my apprenticeship, I was teaching ceramic painting techniques when a
student inquired about mosaics. Immediately, I was hooked.
For over 10 years now, I have been creating
mosaics. Not only do I sculpt and hand paint tiles, I am constantly searching
for unique and exotic materials to incorporate into my pieces. Tile remnants,
commercial job scraps, broken dishes, scraps of metal, found stones, salvaged
children’s toys, you name it. My shop is filled with objects waiting to find a
new home in a piece of art.

“Ablaze” celebrates the strength, creativity, and passion of women. The brilliant array of color captivates the imagination and invites the viewer into a new realm. Nearly all tile pieces in this mosaic were rescued from a tile stores trash. They were either discontinued tile colors or chipped and broken pieces that the tile store could no longer sell. It’s become one of my favorite pieces not only for how it feels and looks, but also because such beauty came to be from dumpster diving!
This is the first Mannequin I made, and there will definitely be many more! When the mannequin came my, way I wasn’t sure what to do with it, as it was made of thin plastic and couldn’t hold heavy tile or glass. Luckily I had saved children’s party favors and decorations that included lightweight plastic jewels and charms that worked perfectly on “The Mannequin”. Sometimes I question my “save everything” policy-- especially when my shop is filled, ceiling high-- but with this project, I was reminded that there are always opportunities to use and reuse objects in art.
“Red Carpet” celebrates the glamour of Hollywood while mocking the current obsession with celebrity and fame. Heidi Stapleton, the starlet of this mosaic, is larger than life and adorned with jewels, fur, and a fabulous spray tan. Meanwhile, the teeny tiny paparazzi and fans are squished behind the red carpet ropes, fighting for their chance at an interview, photograph, or just a glimpse of this Hollywood Heavyweight. Nearly everything in this piece was sculpted and hand painted to create the detailed faces, cameras, microphones, cell phones, the movie theater, marquee, limos and of course the city buildings complete with spotlights. Perhaps the movie title says it all-- “Blind Addiction”-- but after all, who can resist the magic that the movies, and their stars, have entertained us with since the beginning of film.
“Santa Ynez” honors southern California’s lush and beautiful wine country. All of the tiles used in this piece are hand painted, then cut individually to achieve the smallest of details. I wanted the piece to feel as if the woman is inviting the viewer into the vineyards, to join her for some lovely wine, and delicious fruits and cheeses.
“Sunflowers for Van Gogh” is a tribute to one of my favorite artists. The sunflowers, leaves, and vase are all hand sculpted clay. And most of the red table is hand painted tile with subtle images of spirals, numbers, and squares for shading. The piece is almost three-dimensional with the sunflowers extending out of the vase and coming toward you, blossoming from the background.
