I call my recycled materials work "reclaimed glass" with the motto: creating eye-catching work from overlooked materials.

I like to find ways to give a new life to glass that might otherwise end up in a landfill. Using standard mosaic techniques—glue the glass to something else and grout it—I try to create works of art for everyday use and enjoyment. The reclaimed glass I use comes in several forms, each bringing a different feel to the work. I use a mixture of plate glass and tempered glass in several textures. A variety of other objects—leaves, flowers, paper, stained glass, glass tile, lead/tin solder, kiln-formed glass—help to make each piece an original work of art. The mosaic process ensures that the embellishments placed between the layers of glass are permanently sealed from exposure to air and water. (However, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight will cause fading.)

One reason I like working with "reclaimed glass" is that it’s relatively easy to get. What I use is often the waste material from another type of glass business. Another is that, due to the cost of glass recycling, the only other way I’ve found to get rid of glass is to throw it away. The environmentalist in me feels bad about that. Apparently others feel the same way because I get a lot of glass from friends and through my local free-cycle group.
